perhaps my longest love affair with a theme song has been the "growing pains" song.
over the course of the show - it went through many arrangements- and i learned them all -
and they all made me cry... none more than the acapella one.... to this day - it breaks my heart <3
i owe a huge debt of gratitude to this theme song for forever influencing the depth of my connection to music,
and instilling in me the importance of good lyrics AND a good melody AND good instrumentation... instead of just picking one of those elements to focus on.... make it ALL as good as it can be.
i think it also instilled in me a belief that a song never has to be done just ONE way - which is why i rewrite my music so much... every time it's performed or recorded - it's different... and i think the many different versions of this song that i connected to so early on - is to blame for my love of rewriting :D
they just don't write songs like this anymore :D <3
and STILL my favorite.... i just listened to it and started crying all over myself....
soooo beautiful, my goodness. it reminds me so much of my favorite acapella group Glad ...
another group who ever changed the way i related to music.
okay. i'm bringin' in the BIG guns... probably the biggest influence on my musical writing style
was Beverly Hills 90210. the electric guitar anthems swimming in reverb, the sax solos....
everything is just SOOOOOOO 80's/90's.... i feel like everything i write is in one way or another -
a tribute to this exact style of music <3 this is another one that went through many versions through the years-
ALL OF THEM AWESOME.... my favorite being the last one - because of the 3 little notes on the piano at the end :D
this was another one of our FAVORITE shows as kids... and this theme song still inspires me...
i think it's why i love using "bells" in my songs so much :D
i still remember the very first time i heard the theme song to Cagney & Lacey...
it was in our other house, which means i was younger than 10 years old, it was almost sundown on saturday night,
and my dad brought me in to the living room and had me stand in front of the tv, but with my back to it
so i couldn't SEE it, i could only hear it (i guess he thought the intro was too "adult" for me ;D)
i freaked out and listened to it constantly after that.... to this day i write dueling saxophone parts in every song
that later get turned into something else... but it's always an instinct of mine to put them in there :D
does the murder she wrote theme song even NEED an explanation?
ITS ONE OF THE BEST SONGS EVER EVER EVER. and it KILLS me that my new favorite show "playing house" talks about this show all the time - the main male lead character Mark is obsessed with the song and the show and jessica fletcher... its SO FUNNY to see a grown man addicted to murder she wrote... i just... gawd. its just a testament to how awesomely bad and hilarious this show was and how the theme song stands the test of time.
this show makes me miss my nana <3 we used to watch this as a family, and it scared me so much, i'd run down to sleep with my nana in the middle of the night. she'd calm me down by having me alphabetically list every flower i could think of... it always worked :D <3
another awesome crime drama from back then is Matlock.... another one we watched growing up that scared me out of my mind and sent me running down to nana's room (now my room) in the middle of the night. this is a sexier, more bawdy take on a theme song... it makes me laugh, but its AWESOME.
another sexy/funny crime theme song was the perry mason theme song... i just listened to it again for the first time in awhile -and my entire body broke out in goosebumps... its chilling, and sexy, and scary, and super fun :D
a theme song that i STILL sing to myself almost every day - is the punky brewster theme song.
this show was so terrible, but we LOVED IT. this show had them playing in the back alley in a refrigerator box....
but the song is SOLID, and i still remember how to play it on the piano ;D
okay! we have come to a song that i still love, but it's from a show i have NEVER SEEN.
EVER. the greatest american hero was a show we were NOT allowed to watch... but i've known the theme song for as long as i can remember! i wonder if they have them all on netflix...??
OKAY. we have come to my most important musical influence as a young adult -
ROUNDHOUSE. it was a short lived nickelodeon show, and i was BEYOND obsessed with it.
like really, beyond obsession. i learned all the songs, all the dances, i dressed like them, cut my hair like them,
sang like them, talked like them, EVERYTHING. i became a different person because of this show.
this show really helped form who i am as a person, a musician, and a performer...
we all have those influences .... for most performers it's barbra streisand, or celine dion, or bob dylan, or...???
MINE IS ROUNDHOUSE. no joke. a huge part of me is still that kid who copied everything they did
AND JUST WANTED TO BE ON THIS SHOW. i love it to this day. LOVE IT. i still have them ALL on vhs and watch them around christmas time and relive my childhood :D :D :D :D :D <3
as if the beginning of the show wasn't cool enough - they did a LIVE ACAPELLA VERSION AT THE END OF EVERY EPISODE.... still - i almost cry listening to this - it brings back SO MANY MEMORIES. i wanted to BE THEM. omg... i STILL kind of want to be them!!! i want to be julienne renee (the blonde) and have crystal lewis' (the red head) voice. THESE PEOPLE WERE MY SUPERHEROES.
I STILL WANT TO BE THEM. i just identified something in myself. i am approaching 40 and i still want to be who i wanted to be when i was 12. that actually feels kinda cool ;D
the reason why ROUNDHOUSE was so cool, is because it was like In Living Colour, only kid appropriate. it was like Saturday Night Live, but RELATABLE. they had skits, they had cool outfits, they had moving sets, it was live, they had dances at every commercial break, and LIVE SONGS EVERY EPISODE. i mean - it was incredible. it was an absolutely incredible show. i wanted to be on this show SO BADLY... here is an amazing video someone put together of a lot of the songs from the show... i'm going to watch it and go to bed :D <3
sidenote - if you are familiar with my shows/music - you will REALLY hear the influence of these songs...
what inspired you as a kid?! :D
