though maxi dresses are not a new idea (i wore a ton of them in the 90's), they are coming back in a big way.
i decided to put together a little presentation of some of my favorite ways to wear them. i would honestly use pictures of my own wardrobe (because i have so many of these dresses by now), but no one wants to see me ;D let's take it to the streets.
ABSOLUTELY my all time favorite way to wear a maxi is with a simple jean jacket. but over the winter i acquired a few faux leather jackets as well, and had to add that way to the list. it just looks to cool!
of course, it really is the whole outfit. since i'm not a little twig - i really have to accessorize the maxi to make it work for me. that means a cool jacket, cute hair, LOTS of accessories (big earrings, a long necklace, and lots of bracelets), a good bag, and good shoes - which usually for me - is boots, or booties.
because i grew up in the 90's - that is my natural go-to style, so i'm always reaching for my doc martens, or my woodsy boots... i just feel so cool and effortlessly put together... even though getting ready for me is never effortless ;D
this look here, below - i could never rock. but sandra can do no wrong. it's just all wrong for ME.
i could do the hair - but it would need to be a higher bun, and a little more messy for "cool" effect. i could do the big glasses, but not the big bag slung across me. i'd have to wear it on the shoulder. i also couldn't do a big sweater over a big dress. i like wearing a lot of layers, so for me - i have to be strategic about it. i like loose, flowy basics, with tighter layers on top to pull it together. since i'm big - if i just wear a lot of big clothes - i look like a big crazy slob. but when you're a skinny mini- the more big flowyness- the better. i would also never be caught dead in flip flops.
but she looks ADORABLE, doesn't she?! just goes to show you - you have to know how to dress yourself! you can't just throw on any style because your favorite celebrity did. you have to tweak it to make it your own.
my next favorite is the dressy maxi.
this is a harder one for me to pull off because i sometimes struggle with making layers dressy. comfy and cool? yes. but dressy? not really. so i have to pull everything in.
for instance - when i go casual in a maxi - i do the outfit i described above in the "casual/cool maxi" section. but when i do DRESSY - i have to really minimize everything. instead of a ton of accessories - i would go for a big flower in my hair, or a bold red/pink lip. i'd wear EITHER big earrings or a big necklace, but not both. and i'd keep my bag small. i'd also be more intentional with my footwear. a gladiator sandal or closed toed ballet flat instead of a big boot. i'm not a fan of heels (except on boots), so if i wanted to look cool-dressy- i'd do a platform boot instead of a combat boot. or i'd do a colored wedge. and instead of a jean jacket - i'd go for a tight fitting black cardigan or blazer to pull it all together.
if i didn't wear my hair up - i might add a hat ;D
t-shirt and maxi skirt
my last favorite maxi style is SOOOOOO 90's... the most 90's of them all, i think. the t-shirt and maxi skirt set. i always pair it with boots, there's no "fancy" version of this for me. though in the pics below - some bridesmaids are TOTALLY rocking the fancy t-shirt style! so fun! :D
i can't wait to show you what i'm wearing to a wedding on the l.a. coast at the end of june :D
which is your favorite style?! <3
