do you like weird movies? i sure do. besides a good psychological thriller - they're my favorite.
i'm talking WEIRD. like, uncomfortable weird.... but hilarious... hard to watch... like, the office...
here are my all time favorite weird comedies that i think you should watch immediately...
make sure no children are around... some of them are pretty insane ;D
No. 11: "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist"
i love this movie. like LOOOOOOOOOOVE this movie. it's a coming of age story, and it all takes place in one night, in new york.... and it stars michael cera. WHAT COULD BE BETTER. its beautiful, and SO WEIRD and wacky and wonderful and gross and hilarious... any movie that starts with "you guys don't know what it's like to be straight, okay? it's awful." has got me :D <3
No. 10: "Slackers"
i remember when i saw this movie for the first time. there were people literally SCREAMING in the theater... we were ABSOLUTELY STUNNED by this movie and what they showed, and we just could NOT handle it. i think we went to see it twice back to back opening day.... if memory serves. i saw it with my friend ben mettler, and we were OBSESSED. to this day - it remains the movie i have seen the most times in the theater... we went over 10 times... we just absolutely could NOT handle how inappropriate this movie was... parts of it are SHOCKING - and you just start screaming uncomfortably... its WONDERFUL <3 don't watch it unless you are a true sicko! this is the first of two jason schwartzman movies on this small list - and i really could add another 2 to these 2... in case you were wondering if i like him or not.... he's a genius! <3 instead of the trailer, i'll post the song he wrote for the end of the movie. it's called "my little locked room". sidenote - i've seen him perform this live- and... it's terrifying, and brilliant. ****LANGUAGE ALERT**** like i said - don't watch this movie unless you are a real sicko... i luh u.
No. 9: "Harold and Maude"
the oldest movie on this list... made in 1971.... i always find myself watching this movie when i'm PMSing... ha! gross, but true. sorry. it's a great "i need a good cry" movie... its also REEEEALLY fun. very dark. very weird. it's a classic :D it's a movie about a 15 year old boy who is obsessed with death. he meets maude at a funeral. she's 79 and FULL of life. she encourages him to start living. he falls completely in love with her, and at the end of the movie- he tells her, and she says "oh harold - that's wonderful. now go and love some more..." and EVEN TYPING THAT i want to cry... its a BEAUTIFUL, heartbreaking, STRANGE strange movie. <3
No. 8: "Rushmore"
another suuuuuuper quoteable movie... and another schwartzman gem. fun fact - this was his first movie. ever. and it's also on my list of my all time favorite movies <3 i could never say enough about this movie... i just... something about this movie speaks to me. i could also easily put The Royal Tenenbaums on this list, but we'll just pretend they're both here as no. 8, because i love them almost equally... i just love max fischer a liiiiiiiiittle bit more :D <3 "these are o.r. scrubs." "oh, ARE they?" gold.
No. 7: "Waiting for Guffman"
picking a favorite christopher guest movie is REEEEEALLY hard. they're all brilliant, but this one is my fave.
because it's about theatre, but also cuz it's the first one i saw... i saw this one my first year of college, and didn't understand it AT ALL. in fact - i think the first time i watched it - i didn't even make it like, 20 minutes in. i didn't understand that it was supposed to be a JOKE. i was funny back then, but i was like, slapstick funny. big, loud, obnoxious funny. i wasn't the sarcasm monster i am today. i grew into that in my early adult years - in LARGE part because of this movie! ;D "waiting for guffman" DEFINITELY changed something within me. once i understood that they were "bad acting" on purpose - something in my brain clicked - and my real sense of humor just came flooding out, and that was it. we actually used to have "guffman parties" where we would just watch this and act the whole thing out. to this DAY my friends and i can still recite every single line of this movie... and do. WAY too often...
NO. 6: "Secretary"
this. movie. is. uncomfortable.
like a lot of movies on this list - it's hard to watch. some of these are pretty normal (like "me and you and everyone we know"... some are "physical bit" comedies like "just friends", "anchorman", and "slackers"... but this one - this one is in a class of it's own. it's about a girl who has a problem with hurting herself. she goes to work for a man who likes to hurt OTHER people... and... well, if you're feeling daring one night - watch it. i personally think it's a beautiful, heartbreaking movie... gorgeously shot... back when james spader was still a crazy sexy hot piece. let's be real - he STILL IS (paging raymond reddington....) but this was spader at his best. and the closing monologue of this movie still makes me cry... i LOVE this movie. it's weird, and horrible, and AMAZING <3 this trailer does a really good job at highlighting all the weirdness, but don't be put off when it gets sexual - it IS a sexual movie, but it's not ABOUT the sex, (and it never shows much). it's about two people overcoming their insecurities to be brave enough to love each other. its a BEAUTIFUL movie <3 and james spader is just.... ugggggggh. never better than he is here :D <3
No. 5: "Forgetting Sarah Marshall"
i've talked about this movie a lot before... awhile back (okay a LOT of years back, now...) i went through a break up that was really tough on me. and this movie is one of the things that got me through. i watched it every night for a year and a half. something about seeing a man go through what women usually go through - somehow really helped me. it helped me be able to laugh at my own pain... because i was laughing when HE was lying on the ground, sobbing - it must be kind of funny when i do it, right? right. i will love this movie til the day i die. and "i came here to murder you" is still my favorite thing anyone has said in a movie... ever."
No. 4: "Me and You and Everyone We Know"
not only is this movie super weird and artistic (hello, miranda july.... genius...) - it also contains one of my favorite scenes ever EVER filmed and one of my favorite soundtracks ever. there's this moment at the end of the movie where the lead man is running around outside trying to hide a painting, and he decides to put it in a tree... and then something magical happens.... and i just... it's one of my favorite moments EVER IN A MOVIE. I DON'T KNOW. this movie is just AMAAAAAAAAAAAZING <3
No. 3: "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy"
i'm not alone in my adoration of this movie. pretty much everyone i know has it memorized and still quotes it DAILY. ps - this trailer is EVERYTHINGGGGGGGGGG.... omg. i need to watch this movie again. IMMEDIATELY.
No. 2: "Amelie"
i watch this movie every valentine's day, all by myself <3 i love it. it's so weird and wacky and french :D
i always feel like i can do anything, after i watch this movie. like i can bring things to fruition by dreaming them, and run away and join the circus, and fly, and be reborn as a gnome, and on and on... this movie is VERY very very magical, and if you let yourself get caught up in it - you'll feel magical for weeks after you watch it, too :D <3
No. 1: "Just Friends"
on my top 10 list of my all time favorite movies, i have this thing memorized from top to bottom,
and have seen it more times than i could ever count. and if i'm being really, REALLY, really honest - some days- it's my all time favorite movie. tied with "while you were sleeping", of course.... but seriously. some days - it's really the only thing that will hit the spot.
this movie has a LOT of language, and a LOT A LOT A LOT of inappropriate content, so make double sure no kids are around... and make sure you like SUUUUUUPER weird, oboxious, unruly comedy - or else you won't get this, and you'll wind up hating me for recommending it. there's something magical about the performances in this movie... everyone is just INSAAAAAAAAAANE. and it's the BEST. but like i said - don't watch it unless you are ready to have your senses assaulted.... if you're not - better to just skip it. more for me :D
wanna come over for a movie night?! :D
