probably because i don't usually watch music videos, i just buy the records - i had never seen the above music video before, and i think it's hysterical. i love that they don't even play the real song at any point in the video, its just a bunch of celebrities singing it acapella. ha ha ha... soooo dumb :D i love it. i only found it because i'm a mega-fan of miranda july and just happened to look up what she'd done this year... and there was this video. WHATEVER, GENIUS PEOPLE. stop excluding me.
a little history lesson
in november of 1995, a few of my friends and i drove to Seattle for my 17th bday to see the cranberries, dave matthews band, nirvana, and pearl jam play. it was insane, and to this day - one of my all-time favorite memories. there were a ton more bands who played, and one of them was named sleater-kinney. i had not heard of them before this, they were just a college girl band who were opening for a bunch of famous people that weekend (i THINK... don't quote me... it was a LONG time ago, we went to about 60 concerts in high school... it might have not even been THAT weekend that i discovered them - but it was around then... so, whatever. close enough.)
they were INCREDIBLE. crazy and angry and SO so so so good. their drummer blew me away. i bought their little record, and became a mega fan... and i own everything by them, now. ha ha... I AM A HUGE FAN OF GRUNGE MUSIC, did you know that? i feel like it's the music of "my people"... probably just because i was a teen in the 90's... and that is still my default for everything. clothes, hair, makeup... it all kind of harkens back to the mid 90's for me.
(this is another 90's grunge band 7 Year Bitch... i was (and still am) completely obsessed with them.)
cut to a few years ago, i turn on the first ever episode of "portlandia" and DUUUUUUDE! IT'S THE GUITAR CHICK FROM SLEATER-KINNEY!!!! so cool. SO. COOL. sidenote - if you go back and watch any of their live shows from the 90's - fred armisen can be usually be seen singing along on the sidelines :D so fun that they've been friends forever and have their own tv show... john john and i should have had our own tv show by now, but that's a different story.
i would be remiss if i didn't give a shout out to the movie Mad Love... a movie drew barrymore made in 1995 that changed my entire life. it got me interested in music and fashion and travel and psychology and thinking about things in a different way... it's a huge cult classic for 90's teens... i know a ton of people my age who are still COMPLETELY obsessed with this movie, even though it's a pretty terrible movie - it's actually really beautiful and poignant ... and it has the most rockin' soundtrack. this movie changed my musical tastes forever. truly. but of course, being married to drew in my heart for the past 30 years hasn't hurt, too ;D i think she'll always be the ultimate grunge girl ... in large part - because of this movie <3
it's also the movie that turned the International Harvester Scout II into my ultimate dream car... i WILL own one of these before i die - mark my words. I SAID MARK THEM.
i usually make a fall playlist for the months of september, october, and november... but this year i've been listening to so much grunge again (just getting back to my high school roots, i guess... i don't really know why...) that i thought it would be fun to just make a fall playlist out of my favorite sleater-kinney tunes. so here is a list compiled from 9 records over 20 years for you :D
have a rockin' fall! <3
