welcome to musical mondays - on a friday! ;D
this morning, i looked in my "25 top played" playlist on iTunes, which i haven't done in years. it made me laugh, so i thought i'd share it :D
what's on your list? <3
it does bear mentioning at this point - that the plays are quite low on a lot of these because most of the time, when i REALLY like a song - i immediately burn it to a cd and play it to death in my living room and car. these just happen to be the ones i've played most on my COMPUTER... not necessarily in my whole life, though. you'll get a kick out of some of them... it's like... WHAT?!?!? oh, that was for work? oh, okay. whatever ;D (i am skipping rehearsal tracks, though, and just giving you the good stuff. you're welcome).
let's get started! :D
1. "lost in the light" - bahamas
it's no surprise to me that "lost in the light" by bahamas is absolutely and by faaaaarrrrr away the most played song in my entire iTunes (in which i have 3,954 songs. it takes up 39.61 GB on my computer, and would take 10.4 days of straight airplay to get through them all back to back. go me.)
"lost in the light" is my go-to "kiss me" song, so like i said - it's no surprise it's no. 1.... it works EVERY time ;D and tops my list at 394 plays.
2. "between 1st and A" - punch brothers.
also not surprising that it's at the top of the list (though significantly far behind number 1) is this song by one of my all time favorite bands - the punch brothers. fronted by chris thile (a mandolin prodigy, google him 0_0) who used to front nickelcreek (another favorite) - this band is GENIUS. and i don't use that word lightly.... ever. but they are. everything they do is gorgeous and thoughtful... and this is my all time fave song by them <3 coming in at 214 plays.
3. "c'mon, c'mon" - one direction
i know, i know... how embarrassing, right? not really. this song is so fun. and was the first "dance party" song my niece bug and i ever had :D so it's very very special to my heart, as are most one direction songs <3
this one, and "brokenhearted" by karmin are forever our two songs :D it comes in far below my top 2, at 124 plays.
4. "soon or never" - punch brothers
not surprising at all that another punch brothers song ranks high. this is my other favorite, and was initially my favorite, when i was first getting into the band... that is - until i heard "between 1st and A".... nothing can top that in my book ;D <3 it comes in 4th at 112 plays.
5. "bad things (cover)" - katrina parker
i've talked about katrina parker on the blog before (yeeeears ago, maybe). she and i have been friends since the MYSPACE days! she was the first person i didn't know personally to find me on there and strike up an online friendship. she and i hung out in L.A. a lot and i've seen her perform many times, and she is just one of my all time favorite female singers, and all time favorite artists. she is incredible. one of my top 5 favorite songs EVER is her song "running".... it's unbelievably hopeful and romantic and dramatic... and i'm surprised it isn't on this list! but let's talk about "bad things". it's the theme song to a tv show, i don't remember which one, but i remember when she covered it, the tv show was REALLY popular and everyone freaked out. i played this song non-stop for 2 weeks, lol! it rounds out my top 5 with 111 plays.
6. "how" - maroon 5
YES YES YES!!! i LOOOOOOVE this song! i love this song because it's upbeat and catchy and has a great build, but mostly because of the lyrics.
my favorite ones:
"i have been bound by the shackles of Love
and i don't mind if i die tied up..."
i have been planning for years to get that tattooed on me. it will happen, one day <3 it comes in at 98 plays (though in reality, i have played it well over a thousand, i'm sure. i'm obsessed with that song to this day).
6B. "only" RY X
i am not surprised that this is on the list, but i AM surprised at high how it ranks. it reminds me of one of my other favorite songs "open" by rhye, which is lower on this list.... both songs have this chilled out sad vibe, which is really my favorite kind of music to listen to, most of the time. this song is newish to me, which is why it hasn't been burned to a cd and played into oblivion yet, like "Open" has ;D it ties for number 6 with "How" at 98 plays.
7. "white horses" - darlingside
this is another newish one, so i'm a little surprised that i've played it so much, already. i looooove this song, though. it's beautiful, and is quickly becoming a slow-dance favorite <3 it comes in at 79 plays in just 2 weeks!
8. "fresh pair of eyes" - brooke waggoner
this is an oldie fave, and another that i'm surprised doesn't rank higher on this list. like i said - a lot of these have been burned to discs and played to death. this is one of them! but on my computer alone - it comes in at a measley 74 plays. though on all my computers combined - i bet you it would be over a thousand.... this song is on the official soundtrack of my life.
9. "i ain't the same" - alabama shakes, live, on jimmy kimmel
not surprised to see this one up there, because recently i have listened to it at least 200 times. i'm learning it for chains required, and IM SO EXCITED because it's amazing, and she's amazing, and they are amazing, and chains required is amazing.... it's just amazing ;D <3 <3 <3 it bears mentioning - that this isn't the album version. the album version is very different, and not as cool, in my opinion. this has a fire to it, and is a LOT groovier with all the horns and saxes. it's just a rhythm combo on the album... so i prefer this version :D it comes in at 73 plays.
10. "oasis", "savannah", and "baby" - relient k
this is all meant to be one song... it's just split up into 3 different tracks on the album. AND IT'S GORGEOUS. these have been a long LONG time fave. i can't tell you how inspiring i find these 3 tracks. i have written long symphonic pieces, and entire SHOWS based on a little chunk of new inspiration i've found in these 3 tracks. it's just stunning, in my opinion. so romantic ... it's a full journey from flirtation to ending. it inspired me to write my musical "makes sense", and i don't know. it's just ENDLESSLY inspiring to me, (inspiring, inspiring, inspiring!) and i'm so grateful to this band for this trio of songs <3 though i have listened to it thousands of times, it comes in at a staggeringly low 72 plays on my computer.
11. "locked out of heaven" - bruno mars
REEEEALLY not surprised this one is in here. i had a seriously sexy addiction to this song for a GOOD long time. that's all i'll say about that. it breaks the top 20 with 71 plays.
12. "she is love" - parachute
okay, finally a surprise!!! i can't believe i've played this one so much on here! i DO love this song, but it holds a lot of memories that make me kind of sad, so i don't play it that much anymore. i wonder if i have it on a playlist that gets a lot of action, or something ;D it comes in at 70 plays.
13. "perpetuum mobile" - penguin cafe orchestra
there are many versions of this song out there, and this is by far - NOT my fave. there is a more piano heavy one... this one is kind of dancey and industrial.. it's the version from the movie "max and molly" (which, if you haven't seen - WATCH IMMEDIATELY. such an underrated and incredible film, oof. heartbreaking and AMAZING). i prefer the more pure versions of this piece. also - i was totally reminded of my love for this song last night! it played during the closing scene of The Handmaid's Tale, and i screamed in glee!!!!! this is such a great piece... all versions of it are great, because IT is great, but i'd advise you to google it and hit "videos" and find your fave... because there are a LOT of incredible versions to choose from :D <3 this one hits my computer charts at 64 plays.
(here is the handmaid's scene that just broke me into pieces <3 an absolutely BRILLIANT choice on the music editor's part to use this song... she has just found a way to stand up for herself in a really manipulative but SMART way and she finally feels somewhat free, even though she's not at all... she is finding her strength again. killed me. absolutely KILLED. ME. <3 i was a sobbing mess, and then she hit us with the "bitches", and i started laughing. SO BRILLIANT <3 ps - if you're thinking about watching this show - be careful. it has a LOT of abuse and fear triggers in it, it's tough for me to get through and might be really hard for you to handle, as well. i watch half of it pacing around, and the other half crying).
14. "womp it up, s1e5, andy daly" - jessica st. clair, lennon parham, andy daly
i'm not surprised this is on here, but i am NOT going to post it. it's wildly inappropriate, filled with cursing and sexual outrageousness, and is absolutely one of my favorite things EVER. it's a podcast that can be found online, but i'm not even going to tell you how to find it. it comes in at 63 plays... but in my car - it probably has 250 plays. no joke.
15. "open" - rhye
this one doesn't even need explaining. it's been a favorite for so many years, and has appeared on SO many of my playlists, i'm sure you've heard it by now <3 it's on the soundtrack of my life :D it comes in at 62 plays, though in reality, it's probably more like 14,000... ha ha!
16. "dust to dust" - the civil wars
another soundtrack of my life, selection ;D only listened to 61 times on this computer before i couldn't take it and ripped it to a cd to score my life <3
17. "goldenheart (clair de lune/outro)" - dawn richard
this song makes me cry, every single time i listen to it, which is why i've never put it on a cd, and have only listened to it 60 times. ugh.... so amazing </3
18. "the fallout" - the likes of us
i could never say what this song means to me, it's on the soundtrack of my life, in my top 10 fave songs of all time, the list goes on and on. it is on CONSTANT rotation in my car, and has probably been played over a thousand times. but i only got through it 58 times on my computer before i put it on a cd ;D <3
19. "ain't it fun" - paramore
another #bugandauntieshelly song! :D we listen to this song constantly, and even made a music video to it, once! we love love love love love this song :D 57 computer plays... and here's our video!!! ahhhhh i miss her this age... she was so cute when she was 7 and 8. i mean, she's been the cutest kid at EVERY age, but 6, 7, and 8 were really, REALLY special <3 they were my favorite <3 she's my BESTIEEEEEE!!!!!!
ugh. kill my heart <3
20. "time machine" - ingrid michaelson
this song is probably on here because i learned it to perform it at valley's got talent the year after i won. i played this with the josh rosenblum band, and it was KILLLLLLERRRRRR :D so fun! 56 plays.
21. "heirlooms" - pale white moon
another song i used in a video! :D it got 55 plays in iTunes, but soooo many more in iMovie ;D
here's the sunset video <3
22. "fingers" - j. lynn johnston
another one that's been a favorite for over a cool decade, but has very few plays on this computer. THIS MAN IS INCREDIBLE. i urge you to youtube and look up all his old stuff... he's not doing much music these days, but he used to be a really big deal in underground rock bands in L.A., and that's when i knew him. AND LIKE I SAID - HE IS INCREDIBLE. this ep will forever bring back amazingly happy memories <3
23. "yalda" - layla
Layla is just a fancy name for JOSE VANDERS!!!! one of my all time favorite musical ladies, and music people in general. i have every album, every EP, every everything she's ever done. first she was a solo composer in london as herself- jose vanders. then she went poppy as "layla". now she's in a band called "oh wonder", and ALL PHASES of her career have been incredible and gorgeous. i am so lucky to know this artist and to have loved her for as long as i have <3 this is just one of my many favorites by her <3
24. "joey" - concrete blonde
don't even get me started on this song. i have literally played it tens of thousands of times in my lifetime. it's been in my top 5 favorite songs of all time since i was 12 years old <3 but it only has 52 plays on this computer! ha ha :D <3
25. "the wolves & the ravens" - rogue valley
i'm SO glad this song closes out the list :D it is beautiful, and romantic, and flowy, and sentimental.... and i have had so many beautiful moments in my life to this song <3 it's only been played on my computer 51 times, but that's because i burned it to a cd so fast to get out and start making memories ;D
this has been fun! what's on your top 25? :D
