what have i been up to lately?
well, working CONSTANTLY.
except for a little 2 day trip to l.a. to see therese,
i have not had a break this year! truthfully! and it's been wonderful.
i have MISSED working this hard and this creatively fast...
so, while it left zero time for a social life - it REALLY is how i'm built -
so it felt very natural.
here's what i got up to in october! :D
i redid my living room, and took breaks to cuddle foxy :D
i will share a real before and after, soon... but for now - here's a quick look at the piano wall
i know - i live in a cluttered vintage shop, but i love it.
ollie & squeak love to sleep right in the middle of wherever i'm working...
in squeaks case - she was sleeping on the back of the sofa in a pile of dirty blankets and sheets, rolled over and fell off, and then just went back to sleep in the pile she knocked off.
i have been "eating healthy" since about june. it makes such a difference in how i feel and behave. i fill half my plate with salad, and then something else on the side. ha! in this case it was a little beans and cheese. that was it! the salad was a cilantro salad that just about knocked my socks off. cilantro is my jam.
vegetable mash is my new favorite thing. i fry up a little veggie burger in some olive oil. then i add some onion and tomatoes. i let those simmer and break open into the burger a bit, and then right before it's all done, i add some broccoli and put the lid on the pan to steam it. when the broccoli turns bright green - i put the whole thing on top a bed of mixed greens. SO GOOD. sometimes i have it with a piece of pita bread (like below) but most of the time i just eat it with a spoon like a soup. the oil and melted tomatoes and onion make a dressing for the salad, so you don't have to put anything extra on it, but you could add a dash of lemon juice if you wanted. that brightens the whole thing up.
here's what a typical snack looks like for me these days.
instead of a bowl of lays potato chips (which is what i DREAM about)
it's strawberries, pineapple, mango and vanilla yogurt.
and guess what? instead of needing a nap after my snack, i feel energized to go tackle more stuff ;D
i have been cooking SO much this year (a new thing for me, but necessary when you "go healthy")
and by FAR my favorite and signature dish has become bruschetta.
i make it on english muffins with just tomatoes, italian spices, and tomatoes (and goat cheese, on mine).
after i bake that up, i add fresh basil and avocado. TO DIE FOR. its so delicious
and REALLY beautiful. come over - i'll make it for you :D
i FINALLY watched "Spy" with melissa mccarthy - and no doubt - it was the hardest i'd laughed all year.
this movie is hysterical. lots of cussing, so beware. jude law is beautiful and delicious... but by far the best part (for me, at least) was peter serafinowicz. he is one of my husbands, and I WAS SO EXCITED TO SEE HIM IN THIS MOVIE. he just appeared out of nowhere, and of course - had the funniest role in the movie.
and i just have to say this - i LOVED that there wasn't a SINGLE fat joke about melissa in this movie. usually she is the lead, but surrounded by characters who put her down, or has to give some big speech about how fat and ashamed she is, and it just ruins the whole thing. but in THIS movie- she was smart, brave, bad ass, and all the guys ended up being in love with her. WHICH IS TRUE TO LIFE. love yourself and believe in yourself - and people will just flock to you. and i was SO HAPPY to finally see her in a desirable role. <3 <3 <3
and just because i know you were wondering - YES. foxy is still the most perfect dog on the planet.
mid-october we started recording my new album "still".
its gonna be so good! and jelani sings on one of my favorite tracks, called "stay with me".
this song is just... i can't believe it came out of me. it's a song that i would play non-stop all year.
i can't WAIT to share this album with you :D full disclosure - THIS is the album.
this is the one. i'm going to submit it to tv shows and send it to dance teachers... i REALLY believe in this music. it's much more commercial and i can REALLY see it on so you think you can dance... or The Blacklist... or just... i don't know. ON EVERYTHING. i'm going to try. I'M GOING TO TRY!! :D
and in case you're wondering - YES. squeak is still the most perfect puppy in the world.
here's another yummy lunch - fresh ciabatta roles, cherry tomatoes, fresh mozarella, fresh basil, and a MOUNTAIN of salad. HEAVEN! :D not to mention the freshly squeezed grapefruit juice!!!! :D
i can't remember why i took these pictures, but here's a few pictures of me.
sorry. or... you're welcome?
i'm very outspoken about my new favorite show of all time being "playing house".
but let me just say one more time - IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED THIS SHOW -
YOU ARE NOT DOING YOUR LIFE CORRECTLY. you NEED this show. you do.
you just don't know it.
jessica st. clair is my comedy soul mate.... it's like we're the same person. when i listen to her podcasts and watch the outtakes from her shows - she literally always says the EXACT SAME THING i would say. and lennon parham is her straight man, and she's every bit as funny - just much quieter. they're the perfect team, and i want to be on their show!!!!
here's some pesto gnocchi i made from scratch (you heard me), and then next to it is a picture of a door backstage at one of my jobs. this door is always shut and locked, BUT THE LIGHT IS ALWAYS ON. it drives me CRAZY. every week for going on 4 years i have tried to break into it, but no dice. it can't be zombies because there's no sound. BUT WHAT IS IT???? one day i will know, and i will have my victory.
OKAY. here is a big one. mom and i gave olive a haircut. AND IT WAS INTENSE. she is an 11 pound dog, and i probably shaved 3 pounds of hair off her. i shaved her down (almost) to her undercoat. she looked thinner, she stopped panting, and she has been SO HAPPY ever since. for some reason, once the weather started getting cooler - olive started panting constantly. LIKE CONSTANTLY. she would wake me up at night, panting so hard she was shaking the bed. i don't know why she wasn't like that in our 110 degree summer, but she was just fine all summer. so anyway - the heavy coat had to go :D
and just in case you were wondering - YES. juniper is still the most perfect wonder dog on the planet.
a little update - i still have no clue how to use my phone.
4 years and counting...
here's a few pics i took on the way to LA to see therese... i was confused by the mirror saying...
"I <3's yeu the world" ??????
update: still confused.
whenever i'm driving anywhere to see tea - our song comes on :D i never plan it!
and it always finds me :D <3 <3
LA was beautiful... very muggy. i was sweaty for the entire 2 and a half days i was there. it was miserable,
but the company was good, so who cares, right? :D
we got to hang out with my favorite musician i've found on instagram - anthony starble!
it was such a treat to hang in his gorgeous house and drink his delicious coffee and just chill out and talk about how important music is and what we're doing with our lives, and how to keep the dream alive in an industry that tries it's hardest to beat the dream out of us.... it was a REALLY good time :D
then tea and i took a walk around his neighborhood and took some pretty pictures :D <3
just a tip - if you want to have healthy self-confidence - don't have a professional model as a best friend.
ahem. nothing but awkwardness from my side of the picture, always.
we got coffee at Verve in west hollywood, which has been a dream... that place is all over my pinterest ;D
i didn't love it, i got the wrong thing :/ but i can't wait to go back and get the right thing...
and to just hang out on the pretty step pillows again :D
the drive home was so sad :(
but since we were texting constantly - it wasn't really THAT sad....
the drive home was gorgeous :D
therese and i are planning a road trip through great britain next year, and i shop ticket prices, like, every day.
we built a couple arbors to train my bougainvilleas to grow around my windows... THEY LOOK SO GORGEOUS. and working out here in the citrus trees is NOT A BAD PLACE TO BE :D
i am REALLY loving the voice this season... gwen is somehow EXTRA gorgeous! :D
joe hired me to sing the new Blue Diamond jingle, and it was so fun!
listen for it soon on your tvs and radios! :D
therese gave me some SUPER SEXY lipstick, so i try to stump her every day by sending her pictures of me wearing a mixture of them, but she always gets it. DANGIT. i will stump her. and it will be glorious.
and just in case you were wondering - Olive is still the most perfect reindeer <3
recording my vocals for "still" was BEYOND exciting! I AM SO THRILLED TO SHARE THESE SONGS WITH YOU. like, so so so so so so so so soo soj;lsakdfj;skdf;l kjthrilled. T.H.R.I.L.L.E.D.
this happened on jeopardy.
brando and i went to this super schmany theater where ALL THE SEATS ARE RECLINERS
and saw Crimson Peak, which BLEW MY FREAKING MIND. i am going to do a movie review of it soon, but OMG. gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous movie <3 <3 <3
matty and i went out to dinner to discuss 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee, which we are in the midst of doing right now. it was a fun night, but a lot of work talk, so even my social time is secretly work time ;D
someone spray painted this on the street downtown. appropriate.
WHY DO I HAVE SILVER HAIRS CREEPING IN. no, sir. not yet.
update: still no clue how to use this phone, AND LOOK AT THAT FINGERNAIL. i broke it in rehearsal and it almost killed me - the side of it bled for 2 days! yuck.
now we're almost up to date! two days ago (saturday) we began Spelling Bee rehearsals, and its so fun! the first rehearsal was a bear, but it'll go much more smoothly now. it's hard music, but NOTHING compared to the last two shows i did with matt - "drowsy chaperone", and "zombie prom"... those were BEASTS. this one will be fine :D we have our first run through with the kids tonight, and open friday! if you're around the CV - you should definitely come check it out! "zombie prom" last year was a HUGE smash, all the shows sold out and people are still talking about how we need to do it again! it's so nice to see the community come together to support the arts, here... if i could only make a living with JUST ONE JOB (instead of 15) - i'd be set! ;D
okay, i'm off to rehearsal!
but first - here's some pretty october sunsets for you :D
here's to a great november! BYEEEE!!! :D
